Moderator

Mr. Art Turnbull

Arthur (Art) Turnbull was born in Summerland, BC.  He joined the Canadian Army (R) as an Apprentice Soldier at age 16.  After serving for seven years he left the army and entered the University of King’s College, Halifax, to study theology.Art was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Nova Scotia, the Anglican Church of Canada, in 1967.  He was the rector of  The Parish Arichat/Port Hawkesbury in Nova Scotia.  In 1969 Art was recruited to be a Chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces where he served for sixteen years.  He was assigned to several military communities across Canada. 

Returning to civilian parish ministry, Art has been the priest in parishes in B.C., Alberta, and Ontario.  He has been trained in pastoral psychology in marriage and family counselling, addiction and health issues, and social justice issues.  For sixty years Art has  been an active person in ecumenical and interfaith participation.  After retiring to Abbottsford in 2010 Art has been a member of St. Matthew Anglican Parish. a member of the Abbotsford Interfaith Movement, and a volunteer to various activities of the city.  For three years Art has  been the host for the Fifteen Minutes for Peace every Tuesday at the Interfaith Garden on George Ferguson Way. Art’ married his wife Gordi Jones in 1959.  Gordi died in 2020.  They have six adult children, 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. In his spare time he does daily walks, sometime gardens, and reads and writes steadily.

Baha`i Perspective
Mr. Alan Moore

Alan Moore became a Bahá’í in 1968 at the age of 18. Since then, he has been active in local, regional, and national Bahá’í community activities in Canada. In 1980, he and his wife moved to one of the homelands in South Africa as Bahá’í pioneers. Alan continued his service there, eventually being elected to a National Spiritual Assembly, on which he served for 13 years. During this period, he was also a delegate to the Bahá’í International Convention in Haifa, Israel, on three occasions for the election of the Universal House of Justice.

Alan’s professional training is in education. He has taught and served as a vice principal in public, independent, faith-based, and special-needs schools in Canada, South Africa, and Zambia. After 31 years in Africa, he and his wife returned to Canada in 2011, living for several years in the Yukon and New Westminster before retiring in Abbotsford.He is now focused on community-building efforts in Abbotsford through participation in Bahá’í activities and his work with Fraser Health as a spiritual health volunteer.

Pastor Brad Summer

Brad Sumner is the pastoral team lead at The Gathering Church in Abbotsford, BC. He is a Doctoral student at Portland Seminary and an avid distance runner.  He is married to Meg, who is a spiritual director and who manages a residential drug and rehabilitation centre for women. They have two adult children and an old dachshund named Poppy.  

Islam Perspective
Maulana Asif Kahn Mujahid

Maulana Asif Khan Mujahid has been serving and representing the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in various capacities since 2011 such as Head Coordinator for the National Youth Education Camp and Researcher for various MTA (Muslim Televison Ahmadiyya) programs & documentaries. He has, in recent years, also served as an auxillary Imam in many countries across the globe such as Sierra Leone, Uruguay, Palestine and The U.K. Having graduated from the Ahmadiyya Institute of Islamic Studies, he has served as an Imam and Missionary in Toronto and Mississauga and is currently the Imam and Missionary in Vancouver as well as regularly being called upon for various interfaith events and discussions by the National Headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community located in Vaughan, Ontario.

Mrs. Sukhvinder Kaur Vinning

Sukhvinder Kaur Vinning is the CEO and founder of Ek Oh Ung Kaar Alliance (EOUK), a dynamic organization dedicated to building an intergenerational community that drives systemic change to combat poverty, food insecurity, racism, discrimination, and climate change. With 30 volunteer teams across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, EOUK provides meals, hampers, and rescued food to food hubs, shelters, Indigenous communities and Indigenous agencies – while keeping perfectly good food out of landfills and reducing environmental waste.

As former Executive Director of World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO), Sukhvinder led Sikh community engagement with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and both Vancouver Walks for Reconciliation. She also co-produced the impactful short film It Matters: The Legacy of Residential Schools and launched WSO’s inaugural One Billion Rising event, raising awareness about the staggering reality that over one billion women worldwide face violence in their lifetimes. 

Previously, as Vice President of the Multifaith Action Society, Canada’s oldest interfaith organization, she played a key role in developing the Kirpan accommodation policy for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, promoting cultural respect and inclusion. 

Born and raised in British Columbia, Sukhvinder brings a deep commitment and proven success in fostering trust, understanding, and collaboration among diverse communities and cultures.

Mr. Daniel Bill

Daniel Bill and his wife Claudia live in Abbotsford and are the parents of
five children and have three grandchildren. Daniel is a lifelong member
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has served in

various church leadership and teaching positions through the years. As
a career he has worked in Information Technology, holding project
management and director roles, and organization management roles,
in Banking, Municipal government and private sector organizations. In
his spare time Daniel enjoys the outdoors, bikepacking, water skiing
and spending time with his family.

Jewish Faith Perspective
Rabbi Susan Sharmash

Rabbi Susan Shamash was ordained by the ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal in January 2017.  As a progressive, independent rabbi, she is passionate about “open tent” Judaism, offering interfaith lifecycle event officiation in metropolitan Vancouver, including weddings, baby namings and funerals.  The focus of her rabbinate is on enabling Jews and their loved ones to celebrate their love Jewishly.  She brings the beauty, meaning and spirituality, not to mention the fun, of Judaism to a unique ceremony co-created with the couple and the family to reflect who they truly are. In addition to lifecycle event officiation, Rabbi Susan teaches a course on Jewish spirituality at the Vancouver School of Theology, and is a regular contributor to a weekly Torah class at Or Shalom Synagogue where she is an active member.  She also loves to learn Talmud!  Rabbi Susan is a happily retired lawyer who lives with her husband Yom and their dog Dulce in Vancouver.

Myoshin Kate McCandless
Buddhist Perspective

Myoshin Kate McCandless and Shinmon Michael Newton began Zen practice in 1983 as university students in Japan, with a Rinzai priest at an ancient temple on Mount Tsukuba, later moving to Kyoto and practicing Soto Zen with Shohaku Okumura. Since returning to Vancouver in 1987 they have practiced with Zoketsu Norman Fischer. They received priest ordination from him in in 2003 and dharma transmission in 2011. They were installed as guiding teachers of Mountain Rain Zen Community in May, 2017.

Dr. Rajnish Dhawan PhD

Rajnish Dhawan [PhD] is an Associate Professor with the Department of English at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, BC, Canada. He teaches Creative Writing, Classical Literature, and South Asian Literature. He has been involved with South Asian Studies Institute since the day he joined UFV in September 2009.  Rajnish is also a playwright who has written and produced two full length plays and two one act plays since joining UFV. Before moving to Canada, Rajnish used to teach at the DAV College, Amritsar. As a freelance writer in Amritsar, he wrote consistently for television, stage, and newspapers.

Jonquil Hallgate

Jonquil has been involved in Interfaith work for over 50 years. Her journey began through lessons learned from parents and service opportunities at church as a young girl.  Jonquil was involved in the inception of the Surrey Interfaith Council almost 30 years ago.The opportunity to meet, to learn from, to share with, and to be invited to participate in other people’s  Faith Communities has enriched her life immensely Jonquil has worked for decades in non-profit organizations that have supported people who live in poverty, who have been unhoused, perhaps experiencing substance use issues, fleeing violence, etc. 

More recently, Jonquil has worked supporting women, children and gender-diverse individuals to find appropriate housing and needed  services in Downtown Vancouver. Jonquil has also worked for different  environmental organizations and has been a working Board member of the Surrey Urban Farmers Market for more than 15 years. Jonquil has volunteered with many other organizations that she has been interested in throughout the years.The idea that ‘a stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet’ is a major principal in how she lives her life.

Dr. Elaine McCeary 

Dr. Elaine McCreary, professor of international development, who served five years at the Bahá’í World Centre, and then back in Canada, as staff of the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, now retired.  She has since published two books to share with multi-faith audiences her love of research into Bahá’í Sacred Writings.

Christian Perspective
Deacon Richard

Rev. Mr. Richard Chau is an ordained Roman Catholic cleric serving as a permanent deacon at Holy Rosary Cathedral in downtown Vancouver. He is the appointed Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations Officer for the Archdiocese of Vancouver. In this role, he also serves as executive member at the Canadian Council of Churches’ Social Justice Commission and Multifaith Summit Council of BC. Before his ordination, he was an engineer by profession with forty-years of experience in I.T. software development and data analytics in the telecom industry in Australia and Canada. He taught at Trinity Western University and was a faculty member of BCIT’s School of Computing. He and his wife are thankful for their children and grandchildren. His faith journey continues to lead his family to live the life of Thanksgiving.

Mr. Naeem Ahmed Lakhan

Naeem Ahmed Lakhan was born in Pakistan, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering before moving to Canada in 1997. He currently works as an IT Manager with a local private company. Deeply committed to community service, he is presently serving as the President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Greater Vancouver Area.

Outside of his professional and community responsibilities, Mr. Lakhan enjoys playing field hockey and cricket. His wife and two children are also active volunteers within the local Ahmadiyya community.

Mr. Eden Engen

Eden and his wife, Tonya, have been married for 38 years and are the parents of four children and nine grandchildren. He has spent more than 30 years in the wealth management industry and enjoys coaching CrossFit in his spare time. Eden also serves as the stake president of the Surrey British Columbia Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, supporting eight congregations and nearly 3,000 members speaking Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Mandarin, Tagalog, and English.

Rabbi Arik Labowitz

Rabbi Arik Labowitz is a dynamic educator and leader committed to connecting people to the Jewish tradition in meaningful and relevant ways. Arik comes from a diverse Jewish background and especially identifies with couples and families who are looking for a connection to Judaism outside of a traditional synagogue setting.Arik comes from a family of rabbis and has spent most of his adult life in Jewish leadership roles. In addition to devoting years of study and practice to the Jewish tradition, Arik has gleaned wisdom from other spiritual traditions of the East and West. In the past two decades Arik has worked professionally with synagogues, small communities, and unaffiliated families and couples to help them all find a personalized relationship with Judaism. He has recorded two CDs of Jewish Music under the title Simu Lev, and has been privileged to produced CDs for several talented musicians as well.

Mr. Shrinath Dwivedi

Shrinath Dwivedi has three Master digrees: English,Hindi&Pol.Sc. He taught in Indian and Canadian universities.He organized and participated in several national and international  interfaith, peace and literary conferences. He has been actively  involved, for more than thirty seven years,  in interfaith  movement in Canada. He is a poet, essayist, literary critic, social activist and journalist.  His six books of poems are in circulation and edited two anthologies. He writes in English and Hindi languages. He has been featured in major radio talks and telivision shows. He was invited by UNO in its Millennium Peace Conference-  2000 in New York and URI Global Summit  in Rio. He has been honoured and recognized for his contributions by Government , literary and  faith organizations.

Elder Darlene Mcintosh

Darlene is an Elder of Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. She is Grouse clan, daughter of Mary Quaw of Lheidli T’enneh and Peter Zatorski of Prince George. She is the granddaughter of Elsie George from Saik’uz First Nation and Augusta Quaw of Lheidli T’enneh. Darlene is devoted to family, she is married, over 40 years, to Neil McIntosh and is mother to Blake (Laurie) and Kyle (Neysa) and a dedicated grandmother to Jake, Konnor and Kade.

Larry Bagnell served as Yukon’s representative in Ottawa for over a decade, served as a federal Member of Parliament from 2000-2020 retired in 2021. During his time as a Liberal MP, Larry was appointed to the Privy Council and served as Parliamentary Secretary to both the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, and the Minister of Natural Resources. Larry also sat on many Parliamentary Committees, developing expertise in the areas of Transport, Defence, Industry, Veterans Affairs, Justice & Human Rights, and Aboriginal Affairs.

Jewish Faith Perspective 
Mr.El Klasner

Eli was born and raised in Toronto and earned degrees in economics and music from Queens University, University of Toronto, and University of Ottawa. He has been a resident of North Central British Columbia since 2016 where he is involved in non-profit leadership. Eli is a member of Chabad of Downtown Vancouver and Chabad-Lubavitch of Crown Heights, NYC. He studies Torah, Talmud and Chassidus primarily under the tutelage of Rabbi Binyomin Bitton of Vancouver. Starting in 2017 Eli began the process of identifying and connecting with Jewish residents of this vast area of British Columbia. This was accomplished through exploring personal networks and social media. Eli enjoys information sharing and creating meeting opportunities for the Jewish population of the region (2016 census indicates a Jewish population of approximately 150 people) and is spearheading organizing annual holiday and festival celebrations. His dream is to help establish a dedicated meeting and worship space that will serve a wide spectrum of Jewish residents of Northern BC.

Christian Perspective
Dr. Marie Hay

Dr. Marie Hay is an immigrant medical doctor who came to Prince George from Ireland.

For 30 years Marie served Northern British Columbia as a Consulting Paediatrician and Clinical Assistant Professor at UBC/UNBC, providing medical care for children 0-19 years and education for hundreds of medical students. She has been an invited guest speaker at conferences in Canada, the USA and China. Dr. Hay has lived and worked on three continents of the world and from these experiences she developed a great respect and love for different faith traditions.

Marie is a Christian who worships at St. Michael and all Angels in Prince George. She has been the People’s Warden in the Anglican church there, since 2016.

Marie is the Board Chair of Prince George’s inter-faith Centre of Peace and Reconciliation, established in 2019. The Centre promotes the love of the Divine, Mother Earth, Neighbours and Self, to achieve peace, harmony, and reconciliation among all diverse peoples.

Dr. Pranesh Kumar, PhD

Dr. Pranesh Kumar was born in a Hindu family of a Northern Indian State of Utter Pardesh. He was keen interest in literature religion, culture, science and its global impact, in particular on human society. He is fascinated by the diversities which he experienced during the vast travels, interactions with people and observing their social, cultural and religious events. Kumar values life in any form and believes in very ancient, preached and practiced Sanskirtsaying  “VasudhaevaKutumbukam” meaning the “ Entire world is one family. 

Sikh Perspective
Dr. Balbinder Singh Deo, PhD

Dr. Balbinder Deo worked in academic and industrial organizations for more than 29 years. He joined School of Business, UNBC Prince George campus faculty member in 2002. Prior to UNBC, Dr. Deo worked at University of Saskatchewan, University of Manitoba, and at Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, India. In addition to his work experience in academic institutions, he also worked on various industrial projects and submitted research reports to both private and public sector organizations.

Christian Perspective ( The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints Church)
Mr. David Coleman 

David Coleman has been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since birth. He has served in many capacities in the church including a two year mission in Peru.  He has also served as a Teacher, a scout leader, a counsellor to the Bishop, five years as a Bishop, a counsellor to other leaders and is now serving as the Stake President for the Prince George BC Stake. This role covers congregations. in Burns Lake, Vanderhooof, Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House and Bella Coola. He is happily married to his wife Laurel and together they have four children and ten grandchildren.

Baha’i Perspective
Mrs. Charlotte Wenninger

Charlotte Wenninger has been a member of the Baha’i community for over 35 years.  She has served for many years as one of the elected, nine members on the local governing body of the Baha’is of Prince George.  She has served as a chairman of the Interfaith Chaplaincy Committee at UNBC almost since its inception.   She is married and has raised four daughters and now has 7 grandchildren.  She has a keen interest in sharing her religion with others and learning about all aspects of spirituality, especially the science behind spiritual reality.   

Buddhism Perspective
Ms. Ren Stelmaschuk

Ren was born and raised at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers, on the traditional lands of the Lheidli T’enneh (Prince George, BC). With deep roots in a faith-based family, Ren values the connection between spirituality, service, and community. She holds a BSc (2009) and BEd (2012) from UNBC, along with a Master of Education (2020) from Thompson Rivers University.

Currently, Ren serves as the Wellness Promotion Coordinator at the College of New Caledonia, where she works to foster holistic wellbeing across the campus. In addition to her professional role, she is a certified yoga teacher, offering weekly classes that encourage mindfulness and emotional balance.

Ren’s spiritual journey began during her undergraduate studies when she encountered Mahayana Buddhism. Since then, she has embraced the Bodhisattva path, focusing on compassion, selflessness, and the pursuit of enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. Her life’s purpose is to cultivate and share bodhicitta—an open, loving heart—through both her personal practice and her work with others.

Ren is honored to be part of the World Religions Conference, and she hopes to share insights on the intersection of mindfulness, spirituality, and community service.

Larry Begnell, Member of Parliament 

Larry Bagnell served as Yukon’s representative in Ottawa for over a decade, served as a federal Member of Parliament from 2000-2020 retired in 2021. During his time as a Liberal MP, Larry was appointed to the Privy Council and served as Parliamentary Secretary to both the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, and the Minister of Natural Resources. Larry also sat on many Parliamentary Committees, developing expertise in the areas of Transport, Defence, Industry, Veterans Affairs, Justice & Human Rights, and Aboriginal Affairs.

Mr. Phillip Gatensby
Tutchone and Tlingit Raven’s Tail Weaver

For over twenty-five years Phillip has worked with human beings using a value- based transformational approach to human development. This approach is facilitative in nature, drawing on life experiences, Tlingit values, counseling techniques and the unique perspective of having emerged victorious both from residential school and the correctional system.  It is based on the idea of creating healing opportunities that people may draw on their own resources to make healthy choices for themselves, their families and their communities. Phillip has applied this approach across North America, and Europe, in diverse settings with people of all ages, from all walks of life. Street people, Christian groups, gangs and Supreme Court judges have equally found great value in this vision-driven combination of universal truths and modern principles. The approach is profound in its inherent simplicity and powerful in its unfailing ability to transform the lives of those who choose to participate.

The Right Reverend Frances Kitson

Reverend Frances Kitson began her ministry at Whitehorse United Church in August of 2023. Originally from Vancouver, Frances moved to the Yukon from small-town central Saskatchewan (Lanigan), where she spent 2.5 years completing her ministry internship and learning about community, the power of small, and the beauty of the prairie skies. Particular passions in ministry include children and families, building trust and relationship, wrestling with challenging scripture passages, and creating a healthy culture around stewardship and money. She’s also a member of the United Church General Council Theology, Inter-Church and InterFaith Committee. Frances has completely fallen in love with the local mountains and forests, and loves salsa dancing,cheese, and her two cats.

Islam Perspective
Maulana Umran ul Haq Bhatti

Umran ul-Haq Bhatti is a Missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. Umranacquired his degree in Islamic Theology and Comparative Religions in 2013, Canada.He has served in Ghana,Atlantic Canada, and Toronto. During his 4 yrs in Atlantic Canada he was a monthly columnist writing for the local newspaper in removing misconception about the peaceful teachings of Islam and building bridges in the community. Currently he is the Imam of the Baitur Rehman Mosque in Delta, BC.He served as an Imam and Missionary for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the Calgary branch at Baitun Noor Mosque from 2013- 2015.For the last 4 years he was serving Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Jamaica, West Indies, in the capacity of Missionary in Charge. He was recently appointed to serve the British Columbia chapters and the community based around Baitur Rahman Mosque.

Sikh Faith Perspective
Ms. Navdeep Kaur

Navdeep Kaur is a Yukon Resident. She is passionate about social justice issues. She has been advocating for women issues and human rights issues and helping new immigrants to Yukon by volunteering at Guru Nanak Sikh Organization Of Yukon. Navdeep Kaur is currently the president of the organization

Mr. Rick Karp

Rick Karp was born and raised in Ottawa and went to Carleton University for his undergraduate work before moving to Kingston Ontario to go to Queen’s University for a Degree in Education. Before coming to Whitehorse Rick taught High School in Picton Ontario for close to fourteen years. During his teaching career he returned to Queen’s to study for a Master’s Degree in Education.Rick and his wife Joy came to Whitehorse in 1985 to open the first McDonald’s Restaurant in the north of Canada, and at that time, the most remote McDonald’s in the Country. They owned and operated the franchise until 2000.  In 2002, Rick designed and built a hair salon and retail shop, Hair Sensations in Whitehorse, which he and his wife operated until 2016.He became the President of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce in 2004 and remained in that position until July 2018, when he retired.Rick and his wife Joy have two grown children, and two grandchildren, who live in Vancouver B.C. 

Buddhism Perspective
Mr. Rick Buchan

Rick Buchan and his family moved to Whitehorse in 1988. As a lawyer, Rick has devoted his professional practice primarily to the field of dispute resolution, including serving as a mediator, arbitrator, and adjudicator. Since the early 1970s, Rick has explored various traditions of Eastern philosophy and related practices of meditation and yoga, which he has been authorized to teach to the public. After moving to Whitehorse, Rick encountered the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, which rekindled his deep interest in studying, contemplating, and meditating on its profound principles of equanimity and compassion. As a member and director of Yukon’s Vajra North–Rigdrol Dechen Ling–Society, Rick is one of several senior practitioners offering regular mindfulness meditation practices to the public.

Bahi`a Perspective
David Jensen

Born and raised within the Baha’i Faith. Brief near death experience as a child. Jensen Advocated for racial equality as child in civil rights South Carolina and apartheid South Africa. Served at Baha’i World Centre for a few years in the Holy Land. Has lived in Yukon and Alaska for past 35 years. He is adopted Deisheetaan Tlingit, wife of 35 years is Dawklaweidi Tlingit, his daughter currently is an associate professor at University of Southeast Alaska Juneau. His passion is the purpose of the physical and spiritual realities.

Moderator

Mr. Art Turnbull

Arthur (Art) Turnbull was born in Summerland, BC.  He joined the Canadian Army (R) as an Apprentice Soldier at age 16.  After serving for seven years he left the army and entered the University of King’s College, Halifax, to study theology.

   Art was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Nova Scotia, the Anglican Church of Canada, in 1967.  He was the rector of  The Parish Arichat/Port Hawkesbury in Nova Scotia.  In 1969 Art was recruited to be a Chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces where he served for sixteen years.  He was assigned to several military communities across Canada. 

 Returning to civilian parish ministry, Art has been the priest in parishes in B.C., Alberta, and Ontario.  He has been trained in pastoral psychology in marriage and family counselling, addiction and health issues, and social justice issues.  For sixty years Art has  been an active person in ecumenical and interfaith participation.  

 After retiring to Abbottsford in 2010 Art has been a member of St. Matthew Anglican Parish. a member of the Abbotsford Interfaith Movement, and a volunteer to various activities of the city.  For three years Art has  been the host for the Fifteen Minutes for Peace every Tuesday at the Interfaith Garden on George Ferguson Way.

 Art’ married his wife Gordi Jones in 1959.  Gordi died in 2020.  They have six adult children, 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

In his spare time he does daily walks, sometime gardens, and reads and writes steadily.

Mr. Matt Murdoch

Matthew Murdoch is active member of Baha’i community of Mission and currently sits on its Assembly. His primary paths of service have been in holding Baha’i children’s classes and deepening classes in Mission and Abbotsford over sevral years. He attended UFV and UBC, but ended up getting his nursing license in 2010 and has been working as a nurse at the Mission Memorial Hospital ever since. His personal studies focus especially on world religious scripture 

Christian Anglican Church Perspective
Fr. James Hwang

James Hwang is a former member of a Franciscan order at the Roman Catholic Church in Korea. In addition to the theological education for the priesthood, he studied at Loyola University Chicago for a Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling. James has served as a priest, a spiritual director, and a formator in Korea. Since he came to Canada, he worked at St. John’s Shaughnessy Anglican parish as a curate and now he is the rector at St. Matthew Anglican parish in Abbotsford.

Mr. Bhupinder Singh
Sikh Faith Perspective

Bhupinder Singh, born in Prince George, lives in Surrey with his wife and two kids. He has learned about the Sikh faith from priests and scholars. Due to his Sikh based education and ability to connect with youth, he is often invited to speak at Gurdwaras, camps and other events, which he’s being doing since 2004. Bhupinder Singh is a lifelong student and enjoys sharing what he’s learned with others. 

Christian LDS Perspective
Mr. Paul Hardy

Paul is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From 1991 to 1993, he served as a full-time missionary for the church in Montreal. From 2010 to 2015, he served as a bishop of a local congregation in Langley, with duties similar to those of a pastor, priest, or rabbi. From 2016 to present, he serves as a counselor in a stake presidency. As a counselor, he assists the stake president oversees Church programs in the Fraser Valley. Outside of volunteering at church, he works full-time in the insurance industry. He is married, has 4 children, and 2 grandchildren.

Myoshin Kate McCandless
Buddhist Perspective

Myoshin Kate McCandless and Shinmon Michael Newton began Zen practice in 1983 as university students in Japan, with a Rinzai priest at an ancient temple on Mount Tsukuba, later moving to Kyoto and practicing Soto Zen with Shohaku Okumura. Since returning to Vancouver in 1987 they have practiced with Zoketsu Norman Fischer. They received priest ordination from him in in 2003 and dharma transmission in 2011. They were installed as guiding teachers of Mountain Rain Zen Community in May, 2017.

Hindu Faith Perspective
Dr. Rajnish Dhawan PhD

Rajnish Dhawan [PhD] is an Associate Professor with the Department of English at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, BC, Canada. He teaches Creative Writing, Classical Literature, and South Asian Literature. He has been involved with South Asian Studies Institute since the day he joined UFV in September 2009.  Rajnish is also a playwright who has written and produced two full length plays and two one act plays since joining UFV. Before moving to Canada, Rajnish used to teach at the DAV College, Amritsar. As a freelance writer in Amritsar, he wrote consistently for television, stage, and newspapers.

Mr. Brett Poulin

Brett Poulin has called Vernon home for the past 14 years. Originally from Alberta. Brett holds degrees in Molecular Genetics, Computer Science, and Medicine, and he enjoys cycling, wake-surfing, and computer programming. He and his wife, Jen, are proud parents of four children. Brett practices Family Medicine in Vernon, including maternity care. He has served in a variety of roles in his local Vernon congregations as well as across the Okanagan.

Elder Jack Spotted is member of Okanagan Nation with band membership with Okanagan Indian Band. He has been living most of time within Okanagan Nation, and working for the Shuswap Nation, Pavilion Indian band and various Native American tribes while living in Seattle, Washington.

Baha`I Perspective
Mrs. Eva Strom

Eva Strom grew up in Winnipeg and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba. Seeking “to find herself” she moved to BC over 40 years ago. At first she explored the question “What is happiness? How and where can I find it?” Eventually she found the beautiful and everlasting garden of the Baha’i Faith. “It just makes perfect sense to me”, she says. “Spiritual and practical, it has immense value for humanity at this time in history”. As a Baha’i, Eva has served on regional educational committees, as a children’s class teacher, as an “animator” for the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment program and on the local administrative council for over 20 years. Retired from a career as an employment counsellor, Eva dedicates much of her time to Baha’u’llah’s vision of a united and peaceful world by hosting World Peace Conversations, World Peace Prayers and by being involved in devotional gatherings and study circles and other personal and community development activities.

Randy has been married to Hannah since 1996, have three beautiful children and live in Vernon, BC. Dr. David Smith

David Smith is grateful for the honour to participate in and moderate the World Religions Conference in Vernon this year.
David grew up in the North Okanagan, and returned to Vernon with his family in 2003.. Thereafter he pursued his academic studies eventually graduating medical school and further specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry, which he now practices in the North Okanagan.
He has always been very interested in people’s world views and especially what anchors them through their adversities and what propels them in their growth.  He has a great interest in and respect for people of all faiths and is eager to learn more this year from the participants about their various views on the hereafter!

Jewish Faith Perspective
Mrs. Susan Shawlee

Susan Shawlee is a seasoned speaker on matters of Judaic practice and custom. She has represented Judaism in a variety of forums, and leads many talks and tours on Judaism to students from elementary to senior school levels. She leads the Chevra Chadisha, and has served for many years on the board of directors of the Okanagan Jewish Community as director at large, secretary, treasurer, vice-president, and president. She is a regular participant as a human book in Kelowna’s Living Library series, and has served as a community member for graduating high school students presenting their life plans. 

Sikhism Perspective
Mr. Taranjot Singh Jainpuri

Taranjot Jainpuri born and raised in the Sikh faith, which has always been a central part of his life. His love for Sikhism drives him to actively participate in various Sikh activities and events, where  Taranjot had the privilege of volunteering and serving the community. His faith guides the  values and actions, and he is passionate about sharing the teachings of Sikhism and engaging with others in meaningful ways. 

Mrs. Mari Cameron
Buddhist Perspective

Mari was born in Vancouver where her father was the Minister of the Vancouver Shin Buddhist Temple. Her family have been Buddhist ministers for 16 generations.She grew up in Vancouver, Kyoto Japan and Calgary graduating as a Pharmacist from UBC in 1982. She has lived in Vernon for 41 years with her husband and they have 2 sons.  She practiced as a Pharmacist and Diabetes Educator at London Drugs until her retirement 3 years ago.Mari took her Tokudo Ordination Training in Kyoto Japan in 1983 to become an Assistant Minister.  She has been serving The Vernon Buddhist Temple as their President for over 30 years.

Spiritual Living Perspective
The Rev. Dale Jukes

Reverend Dale Jukes has had thirteen years at the helm of the Okanagan Centre For Spiritual Living. This is simply the latest iteration of a spiritual journey that began a half century ago under the tutelage of his parents. A journey that has embraced most ancient and traditional paths , and for the past twenty two years, has returned to New Thought and specifically The Science Of Mind. Dale is very happy with his present Spiritual preoccupation and fully expects to be walking this walk for the duration of his dance with the Divine. Rev. Robin Jacobson

Robin Jacobson is the Lead Minister of Trinity United Church. He started on March 26, 2019 after a long time of serving the congregation of North Lonsdale United Church in North Vancouver. Robin is originally from South Africa where he was ordained in the Uniting Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa. He describes himself as someone who is orthodox though never conservative, believing in Jesus Christ as the One through whom God works for the complete restoration of all Creation, yet also drawing from us our greatest curiosity and respect for fresh and unique appreciation & insights of God’s grace.

“I am constantly blessed by Christ’s’ love for me and all of God’s creation. I am also constantly amazed at Christ’s gracious Presence and on-going activity in our world – as well as by how seriously Christ takes us, how much Christ believes in us! I feel my calling is to remain in that state of curious wonder and blessing as I allow others to join me and me them in this journey of awesome discovery”.

Moderator

Elder Darlene Mcintosh

Darlene is an Elder of Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. She is Grouse clan, daughter of Mary Quaw
of Lheidli T’enneh and Peter Zatorski of Prince George. She is the granddaughter of Elsie George
from Saik’uz First Nation and Augusta Quaw of Lheidli T’enneh. Darlene is devoted to family,
she is married, over 40 years, to Neil McIntosh and is mother to Blake (Laurie) and Kyle, and a
dedicated grandmother to Jake and Konnor.
Darlene comes from a long line of healers and is a sought after healing touch practitioner
working with individuals and groups – in particular she was recently invited by the First Nations
Health Authority to attend three of their conferences. She is a founding member of the
women’s Spirit Keepers and is often at the center of women’s gatherings for meditation, prayer
and healing.  

Darlene is the Cultural Advisor in the Aboriginal Resource Centre of the College of New
Caledonia (CNC) where she support students, advises faculty and is a spiritual leader for the
wider community. Darlene’s center, especially within this role, is one of balance and harmony
within the teachings of The Medicine Wheel. She is a natural teacher who brings a fresh
perspective into the notion of indigenization and truth and reconciliation. Darlene’s most
recent contribution to this process was to organize a powerful offering of The Blanket
Ceremony for administrative and executive staff.
Darlene has a gift of weaving her spiritual connection into words that resonate beyond her
responsibilities as Elder, Advisor and teacher. Darlene’s writing has been published, most
recently, in an anthology called In Our Own Voice, A Collection of Aboriginal Writers and Artists
in BC as well as in two publications on health in Front Lines – Portraits of Caregivers in Northern
British Columbia and Introduction to Aboriginal Health and Healthcare in Canada. Darlene is an
advocate for health, the arts and education.

Jewish Faith Perspective
Mr.Eli Klasner

Eli Klasner was raised in Toronto and earned degrees in economics and music from Queens University, University of Toronto, and University of Ottawa. He also studied music and lived in Hungary and France as a youth. Eli had a successful business career in Toronto and then relocated to Vancouver where he founded a successful arts and sports marketing agency. He has been a resident of Prince George since 2017 where he is currently the Executive Director of the Community Arts Council of Prince George & District. In Prince George, Eli is involved with many community and arts groups, and is currently involved in several cultural infrastructure projects, including the development of a new entertainment complex and a community creative hub for the region.  Eli is active in the Jewish community of Prince George, the Lower Mainland where he is active with several synagogues and sits on the Board of the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC, and also Brooklyn, NYC where he resides part-time.  

Christianity Perspective
Dr. Marie Hay

Dr. Marie Hay is an immigrant medical doctor who came to Prince George from Ireland. For 30 years Marie served Northern British Columbia as a Consulting Paediatrician and Clinical Assistant Professor at UBC/UNBC, providing medical care for children 0-19 years and education for hundreds of medical students. She has been an invited guest speaker at conferences in Canada, the USA and China. Dr. Hay has lived and worked on three continents of the world and from these experiences she developed a great respect and love for different faith traditions. Marie is a Christian who worships at St. Michael and all Angels in Prince George. She has been the People’s Warden in the Anglican church there, since 2016. Marie is the Board Chair of Prince George’s inter-faith Centre of Peace and Reconciliation, established in 2019. The Centre promotes the love of the Divine, Mother Earth, Neighbours and Self, to achieve peace, harmony, and reconciliation among all diverse peoples.

Maulana Umran Bhatti
Islam Perspective

Umran ul-Haq Bhatti is a Missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. Umran acquired his degree in Islamic Theology and Comparative Religions in 2013, Canada. He has served in Ghana, Atlantic Canada, and Toronto. During his 4 yrs in Atlantic Canada he was a monthly columnist writing for the local newspaper in removing misconception about the peaceful teachings of Islam and building bridges in the community. Currently he is the Imam of the Baitur Rehman Mosque in Delta, BC. He served as an Imam and Missionary for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the Calgary  branch at Baitun Noor Mosque from 2013- 2015.For the last 4 years he was serving Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Jamaica, West Indies, in the capacity of Missionary in Charge. He was recently appointed to serve the British Columbia chapters and the community based around Baitur Rahman Mosque in Delta, & Surrey BC. He is currently living in Delta with family (wife and 3 children)

Dr. Pranesh Kumar, PhD

Dr. Pranesh Kumar was born in a Hindu family of a Northern Indian State of Utter Pardesh. He was keen interest in literature religion, culture, science and its global impact, in particular on human society. He is fascinated by the diversities which he experienced during the vast travels, interactions with people and observing their social, cultural and religious events. Kumar values life in any form and believes in very ancient, preached and practiced Sanskirtsaying “VasudhaevaKutumbukam” meaning the “ Entire world is one family.

Sikh Perspective
Mr. Surjit Singh Minhas

Surjit Singh Minhas is an active member of the Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Temple serving in Prince George since 1977 to residents by providing “Langar” meal free to the public. Surjit moved to Prince George in  1973 from India. He has a degree in B.SC & B.Ed from Punjab University, India. He worked in lumber industry for two years and retired from BC Rail in December 2005. Now he volunteers for the temple and has been supporting charities including donating his blood to Canadian Blood Services seventy three times.

Buddhism Perspective
Ms.Ren Shelmaschuk

Ren was blessed to be born and raised at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako rivers, on the traditional ancestral lands of Lheidli T'enneh (Prince George, BC) to a Catholic family who instilled a strong love of God, family and faith. She works as a high school teacher after completing Bachelor of Science (2009) and Bachelor of Education (2012) degrees at UNBC and a Master of Education (2020) degree from Thompson Rivers University. She has also completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training in 2018, and teaches yoga weekly. In addition, Ren is an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church. She first heard about Buddhism and became a Buddhist in her first undergraduate degree and has been exploring Mahayana Buddhism, also known as the Universal Vehicle, ever since. This branch of Buddhism focuses on finding Buddhahood and enlightenment through service to others by following the path of the Bodhisattva. Her purpose in this life is to teach and awaken bodhicitta (open, loving-kindness enriched heart space) in herself and all beings.No one needs to change religions to follow the basic tenets of this path: be kind, help others,and look beyond the self to find peace.May you and all beings be happy, healthy, safe, and peaceful Om Mani Padme Hum

Mr. David Coleman

David Coleman has been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since birth. He has served in many capacities in the church including a two year mission in Peru.  He has also served as a Teacher, a scout leader, a counsellor to the Bishop, five years as a Bishop, a counsellor to other leaders and is now serving as the Stake President for the Prince George BC Stake. This role covers congregations. in Burns Lake, Vanderhooof, Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House and Bella Coola. He is happily married to his wife Laurel and together they have four children and ten grandchildren.

Mrs. Charlotte Wenninger

Charlotte Wenninger has been a member of the Baha’i community for over 35 years.  She has served for many years as one of the elected, nine members on the local governing body of the Baha’is of Prince George.  She has served as a chairman of the Interfaith Chaplaincy Committee at UNBC almost since its inception.   She is married and has raised four daughters and now has 7 grandchildren.  She has a keen interest in sharing her religion with others and learning about all aspects of spirituality, especially the science behind spiritual reality.

Councillor Karen Harper
DISTRICT OF SAANICH

Karen Harper was born in Malden, Massachusetts.  (DO you want to add – where she was a member of the Unitarian church ). She moved to Saanich in 1967 with her mother and siblings, leaving for university and work.  She returned to live in Saanich in 2000 for job opportunities.  She is married.  Her interests are varied and include – cycling, including the Tour de Victoria 5 times, French speaker, couture sewing, knitting, sailing and is an avid reader.  She has a BA in English (SFU) , Teaching certificate (SFU), and M.Ed. (UVic).  She started her career as a teacher for 17 years, first in senior high school English, followed by senior high school library, then elementary intermediate, and finally elementary French immersion library.  She then joined BCTF administrative staff where she administered the teachers' long term disability plan, and was a pension plan trustee.  After 14 years at the BCTF, she moved to Victoria to become the Chief Knowledge Officer at the BC Pension Corporation, from 2000-2010. On her first term at Saanich she was chair of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Mobility Advisory Committee, and a member of the Finance Committee. She is currently an alternate to the Capital Regional District (CRD), a member of the Regional Water Supply Commission, Saanich representative to the Greater Victoria Library Board, as well as CREST (Capital Region Emergency Service Telecommunications), and member of Finance Committee, Tax Review Panel, and the Public Safety and Emergency Committee.

Father Allen Doerksen

Father Allen Doerksen is an Anglican priest who serves in the Diocese of Islands and Inlets (B.C.) at St. Philip, Oak Bay (stphilipvictoria.ca).  Fr. Allen has served in parishes and diocesan leadership positions in four dioceses in western Canada.  He has also offered public lectures on various topics and served as a teacher for college and seminary courses.  Fr. Gurdeep Singh

Gurdeep Singh comes from a diversified background. He was born in Kenya andthen moved to London in an early age where he received his religious schooling while being associated with the Temple and Many Sages. He has been a prominent part of the Sikh community and has also been religiously and politically active in Londo before moving to Victoria 9 years ago. Gurdeep has traveled well to 5 continents and his experiences allowed him to be open minded and a free thinker.

Mr. Richard Rush

Richard Rush grew up in Calgary, Alberta. He is married to Melanie (Camche) and together they have five children and seven grandchildren. Richard holds several post-secondary degrees including a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). Richard has served in numerous volunteer capacities over a 35-year span working with children and youth. Most of his volunteer service over the last decade has been serving in various ecclesiastical and administrative roles within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is currently the second counsellor in the Victoria BC Stake Presidency. Richard’s primary personal hobby is swimming, running and triathlon. He continues to race periodically just to keep active.

Rabbi Matthew Ponak is a teacher, spiritual counsellor, and the author of Embodied Kabbalah: Jewish Mysticism for All People. Lesia Kohut is a speaker, podcaster, activist, and coach. Larry Begnell, Member of Parliament

Larry Bagnell served as Yukon’s representative in Ottawa for over a decade, served as a federal Member of Parliament from 2000-2020 retired in 2021. During his time as a Liberal MP, Larry was appointed to the Privy Council and served as Parliamentary Secretary to both the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, and the Minister of Natural Resources. Larry also sat on many Parliamentary Committees, developing expertise in the areas of Transport, Defence, Industry, Veterans Affairs, Justice & Human Rights, and Aboriginal Affairs.

 

Larry’s dedication to Yukon has roots that can be traced back to long before his time as a Member of Parliament. In 1999, he was recognized with the City of Whitehorse Volunteer of the Year Award. This award recognized his incredible service to the community, including his service as President of the Yukon chapter of the United Way, President of Yukon Learn (Literacy), and President of the Skookum Jim Friendship Center. In addition, Larry has sat on the Boards for the Miles Canyon Historic Railway Society, the Yukon Science Institute, and the Commissioner’s Potlatch.

Despite his many accomplishments, his most important role began however, when he and Melissa were blessed with the birth of their first child Aurora, in October 2008 and their second child, Dawson born in November 2011.

Larry is also a graduate of the University of Toronto with Bachelor’s Degrees in both Arts and Science.

Street people, Christian groups, gangs and Supreme Court judges have equally found great value in this vision-driven combination of universal truths and modern principles. The approach is profound in its inherent simplicity and powerful in its unfailing ability to transform the lives of those who choose to participate.

The Right Reverend Frances Kitson

Reverend Frances Kitson began her ministry at Whitehorse United Church in August of 2023. Originally from Vancouver, Frances moved to the Yukon from small-town central Saskatchewan (Lanigan), where she spent 2.5 years completing her ministry internship and learning about community, the power of small, and the beauty of the prairie skies. Particular passions in ministry include children and families, building trust and relationship, wrestling with challenging scripture passages, and creating a healthy culture around stewardship and money. She’s also a member of the United Church General Council Theology, Inter-Church and InterFaith Committee. Frances has completely fallen in love with the local mountains and forests, and loves salsa dancing,cheese, and her two cats.

Shakoor Ahmad graduated from Jamia Ahmadiyya Canada in 2010.For the past eleven years served in East Africa, Western Ontario region, Toronto and Saskatoon. Shakoor father of three childern. Currently serving in Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Vancouver.

Ms. Navdeep Kaur

Navdeep Kaur is a Yukon Resident. She is passionate about social justice issues. She has been advocating for women issues and human rights issues and helping new immigrants to Yukon by volunteering at Guru Nanak Sikh Organization Of Yukon. Navdeep Kaur is currently the president of the organization

Christian Anglican Church Perspective
The Rt. Rev. Leslie Wheeler-Dame

Lesley Wheeler-Dame was elected on the first ballot as coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Yukon on May 4, 2019. She succeeded the Rt. Rev. Larry Robertson as bishop upon his retirement and was consecrated as bishop of Yukon on August 26.Born in Windsor, Ont., Bishop Wheeler-Dame began her career as a social worker and moved to Yukon in 1996 to work for the provincial government. In 1997, she began serving as a lay minister-in-charge, followed by her ordination as a deacon and then priest. She has a bachelor’s degree in theology and served as an incumbent and regional dean in Alberta and archdeacon in Yukon before her election as bishop.

Mr. Elisha Sidoun

Elisha Sidoun was born in Montreal yet immigrated to Jerusalem before the age of ten. He moved to the Yukon in 2017 to work for the Ta'an Kwach'an Council First Nation and is now working as a Ministerial Advisor for the Yukon Government. He has a Master's Degree in Conflict Resolution as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Anthropology and Political Science, both from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Elisha mostly enjoys being out on the land. He is glad to present the Jewish perspective at the World Religions Conference.

Buddhism Perspective
Mr. Rick Buchan

Rick Buchan and his family moved to Whitehorse in 1988. As a lawyer, Rick has devoted his professional practice primarily to the field of dispute resolution, including serving as a mediator, arbitrator, and adjudicator. Since the early 1970s, Rick has explored various traditions of Eastern philosophy and related practices of meditation and yoga, which he has been authorized to teach to the public. After moving to Whitehorse, Rick encountered the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, which rekindled his deep interest in studying, contemplating, and meditating on its profound principles of equanimity and compassion. As a member and director of Yukon’s Vajra North–Rigdrol Dechen Ling–Society, Rick is one of several senior practitioners offering regular mindfulness meditation practices to the public.

Bahi`a Perspective
David Jensen

Born and raised within the Baha’i Faith. Brief near death experience as a child. Jensen Advocated for racial equality as child in civil rights South Carolina and apartheid South Africa. Served at Baha’i World Centre for a few years in the Holy Land. Has lived in Yukon and Alaska for past 35 years. He is adopted Deisheetaan Tlingit, wife of 35 years is Dawklaweidi Tlingit, his daughter currently is an associate professor at University of Southeast Alaska Juneau. His passion is the purpose of the physical and spiritual realities.

Mr. Andrew Victor

Mr. Victor is the elected Chief of Cheam First Nation. Before being elected as
Chief, he served two terms as Councillor. Since 2002, he has served as a Pastor at
Chilliwack Native Pentecostal Church. For the past 7 years, he has served on the
Indigenous Partnership Council at Trinity Western University. He has previously
served on the Aboriginal Ministries executive committee of the BC & Yukon
Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. He has been married to Melanie for 22 years
and they have four children.

Baha`i Perspective
Mrs. Kiara La Fond

Kiara La Fond is a relatively new, but devout, member of the Baha’i faith. She currently resides in the beautiful city of Mission, BC, and is an active member of the Baha’i community there. She grew up in the Fraser Valley, in the small town of Harrison Mills. She was raised in a loving Christian family, and often befriended people with different faiths and beliefs. She first encountered the Baha’i faith in 2013, through a friend. She was immediately attracted to the warmth, vibrance and diversity of the Baha’i community, and started attending events and study classes. She spent a few years studying the faith, meeting Baha’is from different communities, reading the scriptures, applying the teachings to her own life, and sincerely considering Baha’u’llah’s claims to fulfill prophesy, and to be the promised return of the Word of God for this day and age. And in 2017 she officially declared and became a full member of the Baha’i Faith. She now tries to find ways she can serve the faith and the wider community, while also being a loving mother and devoted wife.

As we begin this new journey together, I want to extend a warm invitation to all of you to join
me in setting the pace for this period of time, and to work with me on this path of spiritual
renewal and growth, in a spirit of openness, compassion, and curiosity.  Let us work to discern
what is truly important, to set meaningful goals, and to make plans that will lead us towards
that bright and hopeful future that is already in your bellies. Let us be willing to explore new
ideas, to challenge ourselves, and to support one another as we grow and change. 
As your Interim Priest, I am here to work with you, providing guidance and support as is
necessary on this journey.  My encouragement is that each of you take an active role in shaping
the future of this faith community.  And as we do this, let us also prepare ourselves for the
arrival of a new priest.
Above all that, I am here to listen to you, to learn from you, and to grow with you. I am here to
support you in your spiritual journey, to hear what matters to you most, to walk with you and
your love-ones in challenging times that might come upon you.  I am here to celebrate with you
as you experience all the beautiful things of life.  And, I am here to help you and to find deeper
meaning in the Word and Sacrament, and to help you find the peace, hope, and love that can
only be found through a deeper connection with God.

Islam Perspective
Maulana Umran ul Haq Bhatti

Umran ul-Haq Bhatti is a Missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. Umran acquired his degree in Islamic Theology and Comparative Religions in 2013, Canada. He has served in Ghana, Atlantic Canada, and Toronto. During his 4 yrs in Atlantic Canada he was a monthly columnist writing for the local newspaper in removing misconception about the peaceful teachings of Islam and building bridges in the community. Currently he is the Imam of the Baitur Rehman Mosque in Delta, BC. He served as an Imam and Missionary for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the Calgary  branch at Baitun Noor Mosque from 2013- 2015. For the last 4 years he was serving Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Jamaica, West Indies, in the capacity of Missionary in Charge. He was recently appointed to serve the British Columbia chapters and the community based around Baitur Rahman Mosque in Delta, & Surrey BC. He is currently living in Delta with family (wife and 2 children)

Ms. Tejpreet Kaur
Sikh Faith Perspective

Tejpreet Kaur is a student and volunteer at the Gurmat Center, a Sikh youth-focused, non-profit school. Tejpreet Kaur has been learning Sikh scriptures, philosophy and history for over ten years. She aims to use what she has learned to speak about and share the beautiful message of the Sikh Gurus with others.

Christian LDS Perspective
Mr. Harald Desch

Harald Desch Currently serving as a High Councillor to the Stake Presidency in the Abbotsford Stake for
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has served in various church callings during the past
30 years. Harald also volunteer for the Archway Food Bank Starfish Pack program which provides weekly food donations to children in need that are in Middle Schools. He is a local business owner and have
been married to my lovely wife, Yoshie Desch for 31 years and we have two wonderful daughters.

Myoshin Kate McCandless
Buddhist Perspective

Myoshin Kate McCandless and Shinmon Michael Newton began Zen practice in 1983 as university students in Japan, with a Rinzai priest at an ancient temple on Mount Tsukuba, later moving to Kyoto and practicing Soto Zen with Shohaku Okumura. Since returning to Vancouver in 1987 they have practiced with Zoketsu Norman Fischer. They received priest ordination from him in in 2003 and dharma transmission in 2011. They were installed as guiding teachers of Mountain Rain Zen Community in May, 2017.

Judaism Perspective
Ms. Sophei Morin

Sophie Morin is an educator and an active member of the Vancouver Jewish community. She currently teaches science communication at UBC Vancouver and is teaching an upcoming course on mathematics and Jewish spirituality at Or Shalom Synagogue.

Originally from Ontario, she has made a home in the Vancouver Jewish community. She is the vice-chair of JQT Vancouver, a nonprofit dedicated to making both queer spaces and Jewish spaces safer for queer Jews. She enjoys cooking, dancing, playing guitar, and obeying the Duolingo owl. 

Hindu Faith Perspective
Dr. Rajnish Dhawan PhD

Rajnish Dhawan [PhD] is an Associate Professor with the Department of English at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, BC, Canada. He teaches Creative Writing, Classical Literature, and South Asian Literature. He has been involved with South Asian Studies Institute since the day he joined UFV in September 2009.  Rajnish is also a playwright who has written and produced two full length plays and two one act plays since joining UFV. Before moving to Canada, Rajnish used to teach at the DAV College, Amritsar. As a freelance writer in Amritsar, he wrote consistently for television, stage, and newspapers.
